Take the basic Sugden chassis concept in post 1, take the heatsinks and in each 'trough' between the fins, drill a row of 3-4mm dia holes maybe 20mm apart through the base of the heatsink (I have access to a CNC mill to make this a bit more sensible a job). Thanks for your input, I was thinking about this earlier the whole compact heating issue and yes I would rather avoid fans, maybe I'm a snob, maybe I see it as 'cheating' maybe I should give them a chance. Thanks again for the thoughts, keep em coming. My rough chassis design is looking like 0.4-0.45 deg c/W of cooling available per channel (250x150x40mm deep finned heatsink) Is this in the ball park for a 15-20w class A? looking at the ALPHA somewhere in the box of bits in the loft have an old Scythe ninja heatsink which would look cool hanging out of a build (its bloomin massive), not what I want to do here though. I want something fairly compact, but quality hence I'm using the Sugden Bijou for inspiration, If I could fine their music master at sensible money I'd probably just buy one and I'm still considering the headmaster pre amp to run all this from (as it just uses a regular ALPS motor driven volume and simple relay source switching, all that control is on separate PCBs and ripe to be hacked into what I need). It has to be a properly WAF approved system, so no bare MDF speakers, no massive Krell KSA50 clones with exposed mains for the children to lick when I'm no looking, nothing that requires 4 different remotes to operate (pre-amp will be needed to switch between the RPi streamer and tv, and have control volume all off the existing samsung TV remote). This thread is about making something to properly eclipse both the TPA and A60 for my home listening. You assume I'm happy with the 3116, it makes a pleasant noise at my office desk, but I wouldn't use it at home (my old A&R A60 is nicer now I've re-capped it). ![]() Which Pass, there are so many, hence me asking on here The ALPHA look interesting, I need a shortlist to properly go through the threads of each, a 280+ page thread is a bit daunting when you look and find at lease a dozen suitable candidates on here for builds to research. ![]() I have a half built Greg Ball SKA150 somewhere, but not seen it since moving house. I'm not afraid of a more complex build, my assembly abilities are pretty good (I'm certified for space flight hardware assembly). My speakers are well into the 80s dB so despite not wanting a lot of power I think 10-15w would be needed rather than 5w. Could make for a very cheap (mostly scavenged) amp for my desk at work. So I might build one anyway if I can find a suitable heatsink kicking around, I know I have 19v laptop PSUs courtesy of the WEEE bin. The ACA looks interesting, I'm concerned 5w will not be enough, but its so simple looking and I like the use of SMPS, it strikes me as an intelligent design cutting all the right corners. This is what I'm building in the style of (hopefully): So there are the JLH amps, various Pass amps, Rod Elliots stuff etc etc, where on earth do you start? I want a foot print of 250x280mm (ish), im happy to build it quite tall (4-5U is no problem). I listen at home at low levels so I do not need reference level power, and my speakers are small mini monitors (troels Graavessen Seas w15 and fountek ribbons). ![]() I want to build a nice small footprint power amp, I'd quite like something small and class-a (no real logic to this decision so feel free to try and sway me) ![]() RPi based streamer with Allo BOSS DAC (currntly running this into an old A&R A60)ĭIY Stereo headphone amp or Sugden Headmaster if I can find one (3ip pre-amp) So I'd like to build up something akin to the Sugden Bijou system: I want to step up my diy audio game, I've done nothing for the past 10 years apart from a bit of car audio and stuff prebuilt boards in to enclosures on rare occasions (currently listening to an ebay TPA3116 board in an ebay DOUK aluminium enclosure). ![]() Dining should be at the top of your list for your Mexican wine country vacation. I’ve done it and it’s totally manageable and very safe. There are a couple ways to move around the Valle. The color palette of the Valle is in neutral/earthy tones from the desertscape, and most structures are built in integrity to that vibe. The fluidity between indoor/outdoor gives the entire region a natural, organic, and earthy rusticity that I find refreshing, compared to other established wine regions with manicured vines, McChateau tasting rooms, and fancy cars. In fact, many tasting rooms and restaurants are set outside or in an indoor space missing a wall or two. The entire Valle has a strong connection to nature and to the outdoors. GROSS: That's from the opening of Colson Whitehead's new novel "The Underground Railroad." Why did you want to write a novel about slavery and escaped slaves? Had something happened in your life that made you want to immerse yourself in that history? Two yellow-haired sailors rode Ajarry out to the ship - humming, white skin like bone. Who knew what brand of mutiny his captives might cook up if they shared a common tongue? This was the ship's final port of call before they crossed the Atlantic. The captain staggered his purchases, rather than find himself with a cargo of singular culture and disposition. The ship called The Nanny was out of Liverpool and had made two previous stops along the Gold Coast. Able-bodied men and childbearing women fetched more than juveniles, making an individual accounting difficult. It was hard to say how much they paid for her in Ouidah, as she was part of a bulk purchase, 88 human souls for 60 crates of rum and gunpowder, the price arrived upon after the standard haggling in Coast English. Cora's grandmother was sold a few times on the trek to the fort, passed between slavers for cowry shells and glass beads. The survivors from her village told her that when her father couldn't keep the pace of the long march, the slavers stove in his head and left his body by the trail. As she stared into the black doorway, Ajarry thought she'd be reunited with her father down there in the dark. Dahomeyan raiders kidnapped the men first then returned to her village the next moon for the women and children, marching them in chains to the sea two-by-two. The dungeon stored them until the ships arrived. And the water dazzled after her time in the fort's dungeon. Cora's grandmother had never seen the ocean before that bright afternoon in the port of Ouidah. (Reading) The first time Caesar approached Cora about running north, she said no. Let's start with a reading from "The Underground Railroad."ĬOLSON WHITEHEAD: Sounds good. That's one of many liberties Colson takes with the actual past. This Underground Railroad, in Whitehead's reimagining, is literally a railroad with underground tracks and locomotives making stops in different states. But first, we'll listen back to Terry's interview from earlier this year with Colson Whitehead, who won the National Book Award for Fiction for his bestselling novel "The Underground Railroad." "The Underground Railroad" is about a slave named Cora who grows up on a Georgia plantation and, at the age of 15, escapes through the Underground Railroad. ![]() Later in the show, we'll replay an interview from longtime Georgia congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis, who co-wrote this year's winner in the Young People's Literature category. Back then, the moment felt purely comedic because the internet was still a relatively new thing, at least for the average moviegoer. Twenty years ago, the protagonists in Office Space (a comedy) smashed the hell out of a computer a literal destruction of technology and a metaphorical act of rebellion. Thirty years ago, Chucky was shot and left for dead, which didn’t turn out so well (evidenced by his re-emergence in Child's Play 2). Related: How Much Did Child's Play Cost to Make?īut once again, Child’s Play highlights modern technological developments for an important lesson about destroying evidence. Soon after, Andy and his pals bash the doll to smithereens. ![]() Unsurprisingly, Detective Norris shows up (after being injured by a razor-bladed drone during the Buddi 2 launch slaughter) and takes down Chucky with a gunshot. In the Child’s Play climax, Chucky is once again “shut off,” but then makes an aerial attack on Andy and Karen. For much of Child's Play, Chucky is a work-in-progress as a killer/friend, evidenced by his bizarre reaction to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and how it affected Andy and his friends. Because he didn't consider the technological aspect, he fueled Chucky's programmed inclinations to kill, or at least to please his main buddy. Meaning, Andy should've been smarter about how he disposed of the Buddi doll. ![]() In terms of modern culture, this plays into the digital cloud concept: information can be deleted, but that doesn’t mean it goes away. This precedes a crucial sequence, in which a tech-savvy apartment creep re-builds Chucky and learns that the doll connects to Kaslan Products. When Andy discovers that Chucky killed his mother’s boyfriend, he tearfully sets up the doll and essentially organizes a technological hit. The original Child’s Play uses voodoo to explain Chucky’s actions, but the reboot takes a more practical approach by mixing the doll's motivations with technological glitches. Related: Chucky Movie Rights Explained: Why There's Two Child's Play Franchises The doll is oddly both a murderer and a malicious documentarian, which makes Child’s Play especially relevant in how it references internet culture and dark web threats. In a unique plot twist, Chucky trolls people with audio recordings in Child's Play, allowing for memorable and inventive kills. So, Chucky is programmed to be violent, and later defends his “best buddy” Andy upon being immersed into the dysfunctional Barclay household. Whereas the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray brings Chucky to life in the original film, a Vietnam factory worker is responsible for Chucky's digital powers in Child's Play 2019, as the disgruntled Kaslan employee changes the doll’s personality settings before leaping to his death. As a Steve Jobs-like figure, this all-new character opens the film and explains the business model for the toy known as Buddi 1, and the pending introduction of five dolls known as Buddi 2. I did the same test for the Flirc Case, so I can share the results with you and compare it to other options.ĭuring this test, I stressed the CPU to 100% for 2 minutes, and noted the temperature evolution. I wrote a benchmark in the past, where I compared several cooling solutions, from a basic case to the ICE Tower. So, the cooling system is original compared to the competition that will mostly use fans and classic heat sinks. If you always have a bunch of wires, HAT and sensors around your Raspberry Pi, it may not be so important, but for a desktop or media center usage, it’s one of the best option. But if the design is important for you, it’s probably a solid argument to choose the Flirc Case rather than other options. I will be quick on this one, as I already explain in the previous part. I will only highlight the two main key points to help you make your decision. My Thoughts about the Flirc Case What I LikeĪs I told you, I’m using this case all the time, so it’s a good fit for me and I like this product overall. Finally, there are rubber feet under the case, so that you won’t scratch your desk or TV stand with this case.As we’ll see later, it’s not convenient, and you’ll probably never use it this way. There is a slot under the case to pass a GPIO connector or maybe the camera ribbon. For example, on my Raspberry Pi 3B+ I often put the SD card between the slot and the case, but I never happens with the Flirc case. The SD card slot is easily accessible. The Raspberry Pi fits perfectly into the case, so it’s not hard to assemble at all. There are only 4 screws under it to fix everything. Other SpecificationsĮxcept the design and the cooling system, the other features are pretty common: It helps with the conduction of heat from the CPU to the case. Note: there is a thermal pad included, as you can see on the picture. The case can get a bit warm after a few hours of normal use, but it’s OK, that’s how it works. The aluminum lid touches the Raspberry Pi CPU and transfers the heat outside the case. In fact, the top of the case is a heat sink in itself. There is no fan, no heat sinks that you stick on the CPU, and it’s doesn’t look like a traditional passive case. ![]() If you are lost in all these new words and abbreviations, request my free Raspberry Pi glossary here (PDF format)!ĭownload it now Yes, they are great with customer satisfaction □ Cooling systemĪs I mentioned in introduction, the Flirc Case includes a pretty innovative cooling system. The colors of aluminum and black plastic fit wells with the other devices (computers, TV, monitors, etc.).Ĭompared to the other one I have, it’s the one I really enjoy having next to me on my desk. Also, I use it with an Ethernet cable and my favorite Bluetooth keyboard. I use it almost every day, mainly to test operating systems and software, not so much with accessories and no external circuits. What is my experience with it? I think I have rarely removed my Pi 4 from this case in the past 6 months, and I never switched to another case. This is the theory you can see on their presentation page, let’s see now how it works in real life, and what you need to know before trying it. This case is sold as the perfect fit for a media center usage, but also with a way to access GPIO pins and the SD card slot.
